The Dummy Line ran between the Union Pacific depot and Pertle Springs and operated from 1890 until 1920. At the time there was several hotels located in this area and a lodge at Pertle. When Pertle Springs opened in 1886, one of the challenges had always been getting visitors quickly and efficiently to and from the Union Pacific depot and the resort. Pertle Springs is located about a mile and a half to the south. From 1886 to 1890 most visitors had to arrive at Pertle Springs via horse and buggy from the train depot. The Dummy offered an alternative. It started near the corner of Holdren and Commercial. It ran east to College Street, then south through the heart of the UCM campus, and continued about a mile and a half to Pertle Springs following Southwest Drive.
The cost was 15 cents for a roundtrip, and it would often make 30 trips a day. By the 1920s, Pertle Springs was in decline and the line was abandoned.
